September 20, 2006Mongolian yokozuna Asashoryu moved a step closer to winning his 18th career Emperor's Cup with a sumo clinic of sekiwake Miyabiyama on the 11th day of action at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament on Wednesday. Asashoryu improved to 10-1 to stay on course in a share of the lead with countryman Ama as the 15-day meet winds down at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan.

September 20, 2006Seattle Mariners catcher Kenji Jojima hit his 17th home run of the season and Ichiro Suzuki went 3-for-7 with two RBIs and two stolen bases in a 9-7 win in 10 innings over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday. Jojima topped the Japanese rookie home run record in the major leagues of 16 held by New York Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui in 2003, blasting a solo homer to left off Edison Volquez in the first inning at Ameriquest Field.
Baseball: Oh set to leave hospital soon
September 20, 2006Softbank Hawks manager Sadaharu Oh is expected to leave hospital sometime soon, the Pacific League club said Wednesday. ''Chief surgeon Masaki Kitajima came to see Oh this evening and said he should be released from Keio University Hospital shortly,'' Softbank said.
