Olympics: Strong start, Chimura 16th in snowboard cross

Japan's Itaru Chimura made an impressive early run in the snowboard cross Thursday but was eliminated in the quarterfinals at the Turin Olympics. Chimura got off to a strong start in the race held in the Italian Alps, chasing world champion Seth Wescott of the United States to maneuver into second, but took a wicked spill after coming off a ramp and never recovered to finish in last among the four snowboarders.

Japan's Nordic combined team was left with a mountain to climb in its bid for a place on the medals podium after finishing the ski jumping portion in fifth place at the Winter Olympics on Thursday. Japan was unable to improve their first-round position after the rescheduled second round of jumps on the large hill in Pragelato and go into the cross-country race trailing leaders Germany by 49 seconds.

Golf: Miyazato keeping cool ahead of LPGA season-opener

Japanese rookie Ai Miyazato insists she is under no pressure ahead of her highly-anticipated first start of the year on the U.S. LPGA Tour at the season-opening SBS Open. ''I don't feel any pressure because it is my proper debut. What's important for me this season is trying to take each tournament one at a time,'' Miyazato told reporters on the eve of Thursday's opening round at Turtle Bay.
