Olympics: Japan continues to falter at Turin Winter Games
February 12, 2006Japan continued its rocky start on the second day of competition as it was left out of the medals at the Turin Winter Olympics on Sunday. There were seven finals on its docket but Japan found itself still searching to make an impact for the second straight day and improve on its dismal showing when it won just two medals -- a silver and bronze -- at the Salt Lake City Olympics four years ago.
Olympics: Japanese jumpers struggle on normal hill
February 12, 2006Japan's ski jumpers failed to overcome a strong field and were shut out of the medals in the normal hill event at the Turin Olympic Games on Sunday. Noriaki Kasai, Daiki Ito and Takanobu Okabe could not gain any ground to claim podium spots against the leading jumpers after the first round and even failed to make the top 15 at the K-95 normal hill in Pragelato.
Olympics: Terao misses spot in 1,500 final in short track
February 12, 2006Japanese short track skater Satoru Terao failed to make the men's 1,500-meter final and the women's relay team followed the same fate as Japan got off to a sluggish start in short track speed skating at the Turin Olympics on Sunday. Terao was knocked out of contention with a fourth-place run in his semifinal heat and finished ninth overall after skating in a consolation final in his first event at the Turin Games, which is expected to be his last Olympics.
Soccer: Unhappy return for Ina as WBA hit for six at Fulham
February 12, 2006Junichi Inamoto set up a late consolation for Kevin Campbell but the Japanese midfielder made an unhappy return to his former club as West Bromwich Albion suffered their worst defeat of the season after a 6-1 drubbing at Fulham on Saturday. Icelandic striker Heidar Helguson scored twice and further goals from Tomasz Radzinski, Curt Davies (own goal) and substitute Collins John gave Fulham a 5-0 lead with seven minutes remaining before Inamoto fed Campbell to beat Antti Niemi at his near post.
