Former world No. 1 Martina Hingis beat top seed and defending champion Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-1 in a surprisingly one-sided affair Saturday to set up a meeting with Elena Dementieva in the final of the Toray Pan Pacific Open. Hingis, ranked just 117th after coming off a three-year retirement five weeks ago, unsettled the world No. 4 Russian with her remarkable on-court sense and precise baseline shots in the semifinals at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

Soccer: Japan striker Oguro scores 1st goal for French side Grenoble

Japan striker Masashi Oguro scored his first goal for French second-division side Grenoble with a second-half strike in his side's 3-1 win away to Sete on Friday. Oguro, who started for Grenoble for the first time since his transfer this winter from J-League champions Gamba Osaka, finished a swift counterattack with a right-foot shot that capped the scoring in the 62nd minute.
