Marathon: Kenyan Ndereba wins in Osaka with solid run
January 29, 2006Former world record holder Catherine Ndereba won the Osaka International Women's Marathon with a solid run in her first full-marathon appearance in Japan on Sunday. Ndereba, runner-up to Japan's Mizuki Noguchi at the 2004 Athens Olympics, upped the pace after the halfway mark to move in front at the 33.2-kilometer mark and went on to cross the line at Nagai Stadium in 2 hours, 25 minutes, 5 seconds.
Speed skating: Oikawa, Tonoike 2nd in World Cup races
January 29, 2006Japanese speed skater Yuya Oikawa took second in the men's 500 meters and compatriot Aki Tonoike matched him with a runner-up finish in the women's 1,000 in a World Cup meet Saturday. Oikawa clocked 35.43 seconds to finish 0.32 behind winner Joey Cheek of the United States, who won the world sprint title a week ago, for his first podium finish of the current World Cup season.
