Figure skating: Asada's win prompts flood of demands for Olympic plea
December 18, 2005The Japan Skating Federation has received more than 400 e-mails asking for a move to open the way for an Olympic appearance by teenage figure skater Mao Asada after her Grand Prix Final victory. Japanese figure skating officials said the telephones also kept on ringing at the federation's head office on Sunday, which was an office holiday, after Asada beat Russian world champion Irina Slutskaya to win the women's title the previous day.

December 18, 2005Substitute Ronald Gomez struck a superb free kick to give CONCACAF Cup winners Deportivo Saprissa a 3-2 win over Asian Champions Al Ittihad in the third-place playoff at the Club World Championship on Sunday. The Costa Ricans looked to be heading for defeat until Alvaro Saborio struck in his second goal of the game from the penalty spot to equalize in the 85th minute.
