Crabs, fish caught in Kyoto to be certified as ecological

February 16, 2006

Queen crabs and flathead flounders caught by a fisheries cooperative in Kyoto Prefecture will be certified as environmentally friendly products by an international marine environment organization as early as fall this year, cooperative officials said Thursday. The two types of marine product will hit the market by the end of this year at the earliest as the first such products in Asia to carry the Marine Steward Council label -- guaranteeing they have been caught in an environmentally friendly manner -- after going through a final assessment process, according to MSC sources.
