Japanese researchers trigger onset of BSE in cows

Researchers have succeeded for the first time in Japan in infecting cows with mad cow disease in an experiment, an animal laboratory in Hokkaido said Wednesday. The Hokkaido Animal Research Center said the researchers triggered the onset of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in three cows in an experiment in which the cows were injected with abnormal prions extracted from BSE-infected cows.

'Earth Vision' room of Aichi Expo to be transferred to Tokyo museum

The government said Wednesday the ''Earth Vision'' room exhibited at its pavilion during the 2005 World Exposition in Aichi Prefecture will be transferred to the National Science Museum in Tokyo later this year. The room featured the world's first 360-degree screen at 12.8 meters in diameter, showing virtual reality images of Earth. A total of 3 million people including foreign dignitaries such as French President Jacques Chirac visited the chamber during the 185-day event that finished last Sept. 25.

Japan postpones satellite launch due to technical glitch

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said Wednesday it has postponed the launch of a land-observation satellite, originally scheduled for Thursday, due to a technical glitch in the launch vehicle. The No. 8 version of the H-2A rocket carrying the Advanced Land Observing Satellite was set to be launched from the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture on Thursday morning.
