Suspect in 2 children's deaths gives motive
February 18, 2006An arrested 34-year-old Chinese woman told investigators she had killed two children in Shiga Prefecture as she believed her 5-year-old daughter could not adapt well to other children because of the children around her, investigative sources said Saturday. ''It is the fault of the children around my daughter that she cannot relate well to other children,'' Zheng Yongshan was quoted as saying. ''I killed the two (victims) as my daughter would go bad if I left the current situation unchanged.''
Over 1,000 still missing in Philippine landslide
February 18, 2006At least 44 bodies have been pulled out from the mud of a mountain village in the central Philippines which was destroyed by a massive landslide on Friday, but over a thousand people are still missing, rescuers said Saturday. At least 57 survivors have been found after about 300 soldiers and relief workers were sent to help with rescue operations in Guinsaugon, a village in St. Bernard town in Southern Leyte Province, about 566 kilometers southeast of Manila.
Moderate quake rattles Gifu Pref., vicinity
February 18, 2006An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.3 jolted Gifu Prefecture and its vicinity on Saturday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the 4:21 p.m. quake.
Obstetrician in Fukushima Pref. arrested over 2004 malpractice
February 18, 2006Police arrested an obstetrician at a general hospital in Fukushima Prefecture on Saturday over a 2004 cesarean operation that caused the death of the 29-year-old woman who underwent the procedure. The doctor, 38-year-old Katsuhiko Kato, was arrested on suspicion of professional negligence resulting in death, and for violating the Medical Practitioners Law by failing to report the woman's death to police, the police said.
