Suspect in 2 children's death in Shiga had concern about daughter

A 34-year-old Chinese woman who came to Japan six years ago told investigators after she was arrested on suspicion of killing two 5-year-old children that she had ''concerns'' about her daughter who attended the same kindergarten as the two victims, police sources said Saturday. The suspect, Zheng Yongshan, who has admitted to stabbing Wakana Takemoto, a girl, and Jin Sano, a boy, on Friday morning after picking them up to drive them to Kamiteru Kindergarten in Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture, did not say anything further and has not given a motive for the alleged attack, they said.

Thousands of people are feared dead following a rain-triggered landslide Friday that buried a village in the central Philippines. The National Disaster Coordinating Council estimated that ''almost 90 percent'' of Guinsaugon village's 3,000 people have perished.

Japanese police Friday searched about 10 locations linked to a Tokyo-based trading house on suspicion of illegally exporting to North Korea a freeze dryer that can be converted for producing biological weapons, police sources said. Investigators from the Yamaguchi and Shimane prefectural police departments raided the office of Seishin Shoji and the residence of its 48-year-old president, both in Arakawa Ward, Tokyo.

200 feared dead, over 1,000 missing in Philippine landslide

At least 200 people are feared dead and more than 1,000 others missing after a massive landslide triggered by heavy rains hit a village in the central Philippines on Friday, the Philippine Red Cross said. The landslide hit Guinsaugon village in St. Bernard town on the island of Leyte.
