Worker dies, visitors injured in snow avalanche at Akita Pref. spa

An avalanche engulfed about a dozen people at an open-air spa at a Japanese inn in Semboku, Akita Prefecture, on Friday, leaving one man dead and several others injured, firefighters said. Ryota Suzuki, 20, who was hired by Tsurunoyu Onsen inn to remove snow, went missing in the avalanche and died soon after he was rescued. Seiji Takahashi, 32, who was also missing, was rescued alive and conscious, the police said.

Two to three people are missing and two others seriously injured after an avalanche engulfed an indoor spa at a Japanese inn in Semboku, Akita Prefecture, on Friday, firefighters said. The missing are workers hired by the inn, Tsurunoyu Onsen, to remove snow at the premises. Unconfirmed information says one of the three managed to escape the avalanche.
