76 killed, at least 360 injured in Manila stampede

At least 76 people were killed and hundreds injured Saturday when tens of thousands of people pushed and shoved each other to gain entry to a sports stadium in a Manila suburb, the Philippine Health Department said. Most of the victims were elderly women trampled or crushed by the crowd rushing to get tickets for a popular television game show, it said in a report, adding that at least 360 people were injured.

31 hurt in Hokuriku highway pileup involving 61 vehicles

Sixty-one vehicles piled up on the Hokuriku expressway in Izumi, Toyama Prefecture, on Friday evening, injuring 31, four of them seriously, police said. The section of the road, which is slightly curbed, was icy at the time of the accident, which took place at around 9:40 p.m., according to the police. Trucks and cars may have skidded, they said.
