M5.1 quake jolts Tokyo, vicinity, affecting 237,000 people

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 jolted Tokyo and its vicinity Wednesday, affecting about 237,000 people, the Japan Meteorological Agency and East Japan Railway Co. said. There are no reports of injuries or damage from the 8:36 p.m. quake. No tsunami warning was issued.

A ferry with about 150 people on board sank late Tuesday in high waves and strong currents in eastern Indonesia, local police officials said Wednesday. ''Several navy vessels have picked up 71 people from the sea,'' a local sea police officer, Okto Wadu, told Kyodo News from the East Nusa Tenggara provincial capital of Kupang.
