Abe rejects call to have his aide testify at Diet over building scam
January 18, 2006Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe on Wednesday rejected a call by the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan to have one of his secretaries testify at parliament over the building-code violation scandal. ''I don't understand at all why (the DPJ) is making such a request as (the secretary in question) did not do anything at all like lobbying the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport,'' Abe told a press conference.
'Stranger tried to kill me' at night, serial killer Miyazaki says
January 18, 2006Tsutomu Miyazaki, a serial killer, told a psychotherapist on Wednesday, one day after being sentenced to death by the Supreme Court, that a stranger had tried to kill him the night before, the psychotherapist said. When asked if he could sleep the previous night, Miyazaki, 43, said, ''A stranger who was trying to kill me was making noise, and it was late when I fell asleep,'' according to Hirokazu Hasegawa, a professor at Tokai Women's University who met Miyazaki at the Tokyo Detention Center.
