15 naval personnel killed in mine blasts in Sri Lanka

Fifteen naval personnel were killed and 16 others injured when suspected Tamil Tiger rebels detonated two mines in northwestern Sri Lanka on Friday, the navy said. A government spokesman said the incident in Mannar was the worst since the cease-fire between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam was signed in February 2002.

Meteorological Agency warns of continued heavy snow on Sat.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned Friday that heavy snow will continue to hit mountain areas from northeastern through western Japan on Saturday as a cold air mass is expected to pass over the areas. Heavy snowfall continued Friday in the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions along the Sea of Japan coast, with more than 25 observation points marking the largest amounts of snow for the month of December.
