Rising number of Japanese schools resume use of whale meat for lunch

An increasing number of elementary and junior high schools in Japan have resumed the use of whale meat in lunch dishes as the Wakayama prefectural board of education promotes it, board of education officials said Tuesday. The Wakayama board of education, which resumed the regular use of whale meat in school lunches in January 2005, has organized tasting events of whale meat in Tokyo and has asked school lunch panels of nationwide education boards to use the meat, the officials said.

Livedoor-linked unit provided fake profit to another Livedoor arm

Livedoor Co. asked an online marriage information company, which is suspected of having played a part in alleged accounting fraud by the parent company, to also provide a fictitious profit of 120 million yen to a Livedoor group company in 2004, a Livedoor e-mail obtained Tuesday by Kyodo News showed. The e-mail was written by a Livedoor official around the time when Livedoor is suspected of dressing up its financial figures for the year ending in September 2004.
