Tokyo stocks open lower, led by losses in mining, metal issues
February 12, 2006Stocks opened lower widely on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Monday, with mining, metal and nonferrous metal issues particularly facing selling pressure. In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average declined 174.03 points, or 1.07 percent, to 16,083.80. The broader Tokyo Stock Price Index of all First Section issues was down 25.35 points, or 1.53 percent, to 1,634.87. The Second Section also fell.
Dollar trades in upper 117 yen in early Tokyo deals
February 12, 2006The U.S. dollar traded in the upper 117 yen level early Monday in Tokyo, after briefly slipping into the 116 yen zone last Friday in New York on the record high trade deficit of the United States for 2005. At 9 a.m., the dollar was quoted at 117.68-71 yen, compared with Friday's 5 p.m. quotes of 117.80-90 yen in New York and 117.58-60 yen in Tokyo.
