Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ begins operating after 3-month delay
January 3, 2006The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ began operating Wednesday as the core unit of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc., the world's largest financial group in terms of assets. The new bank debuted Sunday, three months after the initially scheduled Oct. 1, when the financial group was created through the merger of Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group Inc. and UFJ Holdings Inc.
Tokyo stocks get strong start in 2006, indexes hit 5-year high
January 3, 2006Tokyo stocks rose sharply Wednesday, the first trading day of 2006, as investors bought a wide range of shares amid hopes for brighter prospects of Japan's economy, sending the benchmark Nikkei and TOPIX indexes to respective five-year highs. In a half-day session, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 250.11 points, or 1.55 percent, to 16,361.54, its highest closing since Sept. 20, 2000.
