Thais who once studied in Japan have completed a statue of a former Japanese military interpreter who was involved in the construction of the infamous Thailand-Burma railway during World War II and later engaged in philanthropic activities to atone for his wartime acts. At a ceremony to unveil the statue of Takashi Nagase on Sunday, Suwanna Suphachartkraisorn, leader of the Thai alumni, said they built the statue to honor Nagase on his 88th birthday on Monday.
