Maoist rebels kill 6 policemen in Nepal in 2 attacks
January 20, 2006Nepali rebels attacked two security check posts in the mid-western town of Nepalgunj on Friday evening, killing six police officers and injuring two others, media reports said Saturday. Three officers were gunned down at the BP Chowk post while three others were killed at the Jamunaha post near the Nepal-India border about the same time.
East Timor report blames Indonesia for 102,800 deaths
January 20, 2006East Timor's President Xanana Gusmao delivered a report to the United Nations on Friday stating that more than 102,800 people were killed or disappeared during Indonesia's 24-year occupation, and many were subjected to human rights violations, including torture, starvation, sexual violence and napalm attacks. He handed the final report of the U.N-sponsored Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation to U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan.
53 killed in bus accident in northern India
January 20, 2006At least 53 people were killed and about 20 others injured when an overcrowded bus plunged into a deep gorge in India's northern state of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, police said. The bus was carrying more than 70 people when it fell about 100 meters into a gorge in Rajouri, about 160 kilometers north of Jammu city, local police said.
Indonesia says U.N. report on abuses in E. Timor 'unreal'
January 20, 2006Indonesia on Friday called a report by a U.N. commission detailing abuses in East Timor during 24 years of Indonesian occupation ''unreal'' and ''impractical.'' ''The recommendations (of the report) are unreal, impractical, because they are purely formulated from the aspect of human rights by those who do not live in East Timor,'' Foreign Ministry spokesman Yuri Thamrin told a press conference.
