Fukuda seeks cooperation from Micronesia in tackling global warming
November 30, 2007Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda on Friday sought the cooperation of visiting Micronesian President Emanuel Mori in promoting Japan's proposal to launch a post-Kyoto Protocol framework for negotiations to tackle global warming in which all major greenhouse gas emitters will take part. In their 20-minute meeting at the prime minister's office, Mori thanked Japan for its leadership on the climate change issue and expressed hope that it will take the initiative as a country that shares the same Pacific climate as island nations that are easily affected by weather conditions, Japanese officials said.

China pledges to tighten checks on pollution, energy use

The Robot Museum In Nagoya, a two-story museum with floor space of about 2,600 square meters, has several exhibition corners such as ''Robothink,'' where various robots are displayed and the history of robots can be learned, as well as ''Robot Mirai (future) Department,'' which sells robots and other goods.

Japan, S. Korea to jointly survey radiation in Sea of Japan
October 10, 2006A Japan Coast Guard research ship left Moji port in Fukuoka Prefecture on Saturday to survey the level of radiation in the Sea of Japan with South Korean researchers. Three South Korean researchers from the country's National Fisheries Research and Development Institute and the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety are aboard the ship Kaiyo for the survey project through Oct. 14.
Matsushita to sell world's 1st Blu-ray DVD recorder-player in Nov.
September 20, 2006Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. said Wednesday it will market the world's first Blu-ray DVD recorders with replay functions on Nov. 15 in Japan, heating up the battle with the rival High-Definition DVD format for the next-generation global standard. Matsushita's new products, the DMR-BW 200 and DMR-BR 100, will have a suggested retail price of about 300,000 yen and 240,000 yen, respectively, the company said.
Major delay seems unavoidable for start of digital radio services
September 19, 2006A substantial delay in the planned launch of terrestrial digital radio broadcasts is unavoidable as five Tokyo-based commercial radio stations have decided to postpone the foundation of a joint operating company, Nippon Cultural Broadcasting Inc. President Shigeki Sato said Tuesday. Nippon Cultural Broadcasting and four other radio broadcasters planned to begin digital radio broadcasts by the end of this year, using a frequency band to be vacated through the digitization of television broadcasts.
Frequent TV appearances of chimpanzee may violate law
September 17, 2006The Environment Ministry has started investigating if a private zoo in Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture, is violating the species preservation law by frequently putting a male chimpanzee on TV programs, ministry sources said Sunday. The 5-year-old chimpanzee was handed over to Ichihara Elephant Kingdom by a zoo in the city of Miyazaki in 2002 with the aim of breeding, but it started appearing on TV programs to become a popular character even on a midnight show.
